4-Oceans Atlas

The 4-OCEANS World Atlas of Historical Marine Exploitation is a digital platform that maps human interactions with marine life over the past two thousand years. It visualises where and when marine resources were harvested and the ecological and cultural consequences of these activities.

The Atlas is structured around four interactive Data Explorers:

  1. Drivers of Exploitation;
  2. Knowing the Ocean;
  3. Mining the Ocean;
  4. Consumption of Marine Life.

Each Explorer presents case studies underpinned by data produced by the 4-OCEANS project. Designed for both researchers and the public, the Atlas provides an accessible tool to explore humanity’s evolving relationship with oceans.
