4-Oceans Expert Review: Distilling Global Expert Knowledge of Historical Marine Extractions

This Story Map was developed as part of a 4-Oceans project exploring human use of marine resources over the past 2,200 years. Using an online questionnaire, the project brought together expertise from multiple disciplines, including archaeology, history, marine ecology, oceanography and more, to document where, when, and how different marine species were exploited, how these practices changed over time, and who was involved in their use.
By synthesising the knowledge of scholars working across diverse regions and periods, the project aims to capture a broader picture of historical marine resource use at local and global scales, offering a glimpse into the collective scholarly understanding of changing human interactions with marine environments.
The Story Map outlines the aims of the project, guides users through the survey design and step by step process of its completion, and presents a selection of preliminary analyses based on the partially collected dataset. These early results highlight the potential of the project to contribute to interdisciplinary research on marine exploitation, environmental change, and human–ocean relationships through time.
